The gifted and talented advisory committee was named at Monday night’s meeting of the Tonkawa Board of Education.

‘One Bite at a Time’ group devours school lunch debt

The newly formed “One Bite at a Time” group set out on a mission to eliminate a $6,000 debt carried by Tonkawa Public Schools for unpaid lunches. The debt was accrued throughout the 2019-20 school year for meals served at breakfast and lunch. The school district has had to absorb the cost for meals not paid for in the past. The group wanted to relieve the school of this burden and assist families who have been unable to pay for their children’s meals at school.

A new shipment of Tonkawa Buccaneer face masks are in just in time for the home football game Friday night. Spirit masks are available at the Central Office at the Tonkawa Mid- Hi/High school site. Masks may be purchased for $10 each Monday-Friday 8:00 am-4:00 pm. Modeling them are Jennifer Murphy and Jona Cantrell. Go Bucs!!

IOOF Cemetery needs donations

The IOOF Cemetery is in need of donations to continue operation of the cemetery, Garry Davis announced this week. Brent Bailey is caretaker. Donations can be sent to P.O. Box 121 with checks made to the Tonkawa Cemetery for upkeep.

Social Security Matters

Dear Rusty: I applied for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits and was denied. So, because I turn 62 this month, I plan to file for my early SS retirement benefits. Since I’ve not worked a lot due to health issues I won’t get much and I realize my benefit will be reduced by about 30% from my full retirement age amount, but we need the extra income to help with my medical bills. My husband is 57 and still works. Social Security will be our only retirement so he will be working for as long as he can. My question is, how will my early retirement affect any spousal benefits I might qualify for in the future? Or my widow’s benefits if he should die before I do? Signed: Worried Spouse
