The newly formed “One Bite at a Time” group set out on a mission to eliminate a $6,000 debt carried by Tonkawa Public Schools for unpaid lunches. The debt was accrued throughout the 2019-20 school year for meals served at breakfast and lunch. The school district has had to absorb the cost for meals not paid for in the past. The group wanted to relieve the school of this burden and assist families who have been unable to pay for their children’s meals at school.
Funds were raised through the sale of Eileen’s Cookies, a baked potato dinner at Mary’s Grill, and through private donations. The Tonkawa Masonic Lodge matched the money that was raised which helped push the earnings over the $6,000 goal.
“On behalf of Tonkawa Public Schools and the parents of our students, I’d like to thank “One Bite at a Time” and all of those who contributed to this effort. Taking away this debt has tremendously helped the District balance the Child Nutrition account and pay our food vendor invoices. The group has taken pressure off of parents who are struggling to make ends meet. For these things we are grateful and appreciative,” states Superintendent Lori Simpson.
