The Tonkawa city council has authorized spending up to $10,000 to purchase new downtown Christmas decorations and lights. It will be budgeted in the new year, it was decided at the Tuesday, March 16 meeting of the group.
Fall and summer enrollment for Northern Oklahoma College begins March 22 on all three campuses. summer courses begin as early as May 10 and the fall semester begins Aug. 16.
Easton Linton, Tonkawa, placed third in the 2021 American Farmers & Ranchers/Oklahoma Farmers Union (AFR/OFU) Cooperative Poster Contest. More than 2,000 students competed in the annual statewide contest.
The Tonkawa Fire department has 3 shifts working 24 hours on duty and 48 hours on call. Each shift has a Lieutenant and a firefighter. The assistant chief works 24 hour shifts on Mondays and fridays, and the chief works 8-5 Monday through Friday. The Tonkawa department has 15 volunteer positions. Currently they are full staffed Colby Shultz (22) was born and raised in the Kay County area. He was inspired to get into the Fire Service by his parents who are both in the medical field. His dad is a veteran firefighter and newly appointed Fire Training Chief in Ponca City and his mom is Registered Nurse at Stillwater Medical Center. He started getting his certifications while he was still in high school attending EMT Basic classes at pioneer technology center then obtaining his Firefighter 1 after graduating. He has spent the past few years working at Stillwater Medical Center for cardiac rehab and then in the Surgery Department. Colby likes to spend most of his free time hanging out with family and friend and taking spontaneous road trips. Colby is really excited to be a part of Tonkawa Fire Department and is eager to expand and better his knowledge in the Fire Service to be able to better serve the great community of Tonkawa, OK
