CJ Ballard will write Buc Blab

Christopher (CJ) Ballard will be writing Buc Blab for The Tonkawa News this school year, editor Lyle Becker announced this week.

Buc football will remain in Class A during 2022-2023

The Tonkawa Bucs will remain in Class A two more years at least through the 2022 and 2023 football seasons, Athletic Director Kyle Simpson announced this week.

PTC Receives Gold Star Award for 19th Year

Pioneer Technology Center (PTC) received the Gold Star School Award from the Oklahoma Association of Career & Technology Education (OKACTE). This designation, sponsored by OKACTE, provides recognition to technology center districts with outstanding programs designed to meet a broad spectrum of community needs.

Downtown garland drive under way

The Chamber of Commerce Tourism Committee has taken on a project to replace the downtown Christmas Decorations in conjunction with City of Tonkawa.

If you were to stop a Roman around the year 117 A.D. and ask about the future of the empire, he/she would probably boast that they were the greatest empire in the history of the world, and the Roman Empire would last forever. In 117 it would be hard to see it any other way. The Romans were on top of the world. Yet starting around the 200s, serious infighting began hurting their power from within. By the end of the 300s, they had spread themselves too thin, spent too much money, leaders were corrupt, and they began to lose battles to traditionally lesser foes. By the end of the 400s, Rome was no more.

Jackson Lahmeyer speaks at Oklahoma 2nd Amendment Association meeting

The Kay County Chapter of the Oklahoma Second Amendment Association met Tuesday evening, August 10, 2021, at Mary’s Grill in Tonkawa, Oklahoma. OK2A members and the public were in attendance at the meeting along with Mayor Ken Smith and wife Dianne; Terry Thompson, Kay County OK2A coordinator; Alan Avery, the new Noble County coordinator; and Joshua Reil, U.S. LawShield state manager.

Billings Chamber has meeting

The Billings Chamber of Commerce met Thursday, July 15th at 6 pm in the Billings Community Center. Interim President Lewain Learned welcomed the small group attending and led member in the Flag salute and prayer. Those answering roll call were Lewain, Aimie and Eileen Learned, Rachel Silvey, Linda Stoll and Candy Oller. Oller read the June Chamber report minutes which were unanimously approved as read. Oller presented the financial report provided in a text message from Karen Culp Treasurer who could not attend. The financial report was unanimously approved as presented. Oller reported Mark and Cheri Howry were awarded the July Yard of the Month. Old business discussed. Stoll and Silvey reported the Billings 3rd of July Celebration went well and was well attended. The day was filled with fun events including a parade, corn hole tournament, horseshoe tournament, carnival games, bounce house, free swim, free hot dogs, and watermelon culminating with a wonderful 30 minute fireworks presentation. A family style street dance was held following the fireworks show. Special thanks were given to all who donated time, supplies, and funds toward the event and to the Billings Fire Department for hosting the events. New Business discussed included possibly holding a Town Clean-Up Day in October for students and citizens before the Wheat Country Festival. Oller updated Chamber members on the Wheat Country Festival committee meeting held the previous evening. The Wheat Country Festival is scheduled for Saturday, October 9th and the Committee discussed and delegated the duties for the many exciting events that are being planned. Learned presented School news. School begins August 12th and an evening has been scheduled for parents, guardians, and students to meet the teacher. Five Billings Jr. High and six High School students are traveling to DCLA for the Billings/DLCA football co-op. The school is still looking for a high school science and a History teacher. The school will provide a jail booth, barrel train and carnival games for the upcoming Festival. Learned reported the summer lunch program was a huge success with a many families benefiting. Learned also reported a plasma cutter was being purchased for the Vo. Ag. Department. Coming events discussed were the Community Vacation Bible School to be held July 18-21 beginning with enrollment and pool party on July 27th. Learned provided members with a list of free movies held each Tuesday at the Poncan Theater in Ponca City. The meeting was adjourned at 6:42 p.m. by a unanimous vote. Learned announced the next meeting would be Thursday, August 19 at 6:00 p.m.

Memories from the museum...

For this week’s Monday Memory, let’s talk about Tonkawa’s wild early day saloons. Saloons were also known as a “watering trough, bughouse, shebang, cantina, grog shop and gin mill”. Most were wooden with a false front, wide boardwalk flanking the dusty street and a couple of horse hitching posts. The word Saloon originated as an alternative form of salon, meaning ‘large hall in a public place for entertainment, ect.”
