Tonkawa teacher resigns, criticizes school board

Staci Jacques, a Tonkawa teacher, has resigned from the Tonkawa Public School system. In doing so, she criticized the Tonkawa school board for inaction and lack of support of teachers. Her letter follows:

Meet the Candidates cookout planned tonight

The Kay County Democratic Party is hosting a Meet the Democrat Candidates Cookout on May 26, 2022 at 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Come and meet Democrats running for Office in the upcoming Primary on June 28, 2022. The candidates attending include Dennis Baker running for US Senate, Jo Glenn for US Senate, Madison Horn for US Senate and Melinda Alizadeh-Fard for Lt. Governor. Kendra Horn running for US Senate (Inhofe’s seat) is a maybe at this time. Jeremiah Ross running for Congressional District 3 is also a maybe. I will post more information on our Facebook page (Kay County Democratic Party, Oklahoma) as if comes in. The location for the Cookout is Pioneer Park, 520 E. Hazel Ave., Ponca City. There will be hamburgers provided by a local Farmer/Rancher, cookies, chips and anything else someone wants to bring. It will be an evening of good food and a chance to hear from some of our Democrat Candidates. Independent votes are also invited to attend. The Oklahoma Democrat Primary is open to Independent voters. They will also be doing Voter Registration at the Cookout. The deadline for being able to vote in the June 28th Primary is June 3rd. If you are 17 and going to turn 18 before June28th, you can register to vote before your 18th birthday.

Summer office hours at NOC

Summer office hours started at Northern Oklahoma College this week. Office hours are 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Monday – Thursdays, there are no classes or offices open on Friday. Also, the campus will close Thursday, May 19, at 2 p.m. Summer hours continue through July 29.

PTC Offers June Summer Camp, Academies

Pioneer Technology Center’s (PTC’s) Summer Camp and Academies are filling up as parents enroll their students to learn valuable skills they can apply in future careers. Summer Camp, scheduled June 1st through June 3rd, is for students completing 5th and 6th grade. They will learn problem-solving, communication, teamwork, and decisionmaking. Two pathway choices are available for registration at pioneertech.edu/events through May 2nd.

Remembering the HEROES we lost

Though many people are quick to refer to Memorial Day as the unofficial beginning of summer, the day is much more than that. Initially known as Decoration Day, Memorial Day is a day to remember those military members who died in service of the country.

Annual food show

Kay County Oklahoma Home and Community Education held their annual Food Show on April 28th in Newkirk. Kay County has 6 OHCE groups throughout the county. They are Creative Homemakers, Kildare, Nardin, Happy Hearts and Homes, Fun and Fundamental and Caring Hands and Hearts. The theme for this year’s Food Show was “Mediterranean Cooking”. Entries were inspired by cuisines from France, Greece, Italy, and/or Spain. Each group prepared one dish from each of the 6 categories and brought them to be judged on April 28th. The categories were Appetizer, Fruit Dish, Bread, Vegetable Dish, Main entrée and Dessert. After judging the group with the most points from receiving a placing of 1st 2nd or 3rd is the grand champion and the group with the second best points receives a reserve grand champion. This years Grand Champion was Kildare OHCE. Pictured below is Marcina Overman, Karen Overman, Sue Roy, Joyce Crouch and Teri Harris from Kildare. Reserve Champion was Creative Homemakers in the second picture is Leslie Young and Glenda Wise from Creative Homemakers.
