Tonkawa scored four touchdowns in the final quarter to post one of the greatest come-from-behind victories ever by a
Buc team 36-34 over Class 3A
Blackwell Friday night.
Five of the six Buc touchdowns were scored by the brothers Day -- Peyton and Kai.
And best of all, it all happened before a packed house on both sides of Buc stadium.
Blackwell fans had shown up in droves hoping to see their Maroons beat the Bucs for the first time in nearly 40 years.
It didn’t happen.
But almost.
The Bucs dug a hole for themselves early in the game, falling behind 22-0 early in the second quarter.
Seven turnovers -- three lost fumbles and four interceptions -- plus a punt snap that went 30 yards over the kicker nearly spelled doom for the never-say-die Bucs.
All but one of the Maroons’ five touchdowns were set up by turnovers. Blackwell went only 32, 29, 14, and 30 yards for those scores.
Tonkawa went to intermission down 12-28. The Bucs’ two TD’s in the first half came on an 84-yard kickoff return and a 35-yard touchdown run by Kai Day in the second quarter. Day had a 69 yard kickoff return earlier, but the Bucs failed to get into the endzone.
The Buc defense, while kept in a hole the entire evening, picked up some turnovers themselves -- two Parker Miller interceptions and four fumble recoveries (two by Peyton Day, one by Kai Day and another by Parker Miller).
Kai Day ran five yards for a touchdown early in the fourth quarter on a 17 yard march in four plays, cutting the lead 18-28. It was set up by a Tristan Burdick 23 yard punt return. Burdick had punt returns of 7, 29 and 34 yards as well.
Just a minute later, brother Peyton snatched a botched handoff by Blackwell in mid air and raced 58 yards for another touchdown.
That cut the lead to 24-28 with nearly 11 minutes left in the game.
Blackwell staged its longest march of the evening with a 57 yard scoring effort in 6 plays to go back up 34-24.
But not for long.
Burdick hit Miller for 54 yards and then Burdick scored from three yards out, covering all 57 yards needed in 1:07 and four plays. Burdick, who finished with 211 yards on 35 carries, scored from three yards away to once again cut the lead to 30-34.
At the 6:06 mark of the final quarter Peyton Day repeated his heroics with ...
