With all the “hoop” la over Caitlin Clark and the US women’s Gold Medal performance in the Olympics it would be a good time to remind people of Tonkawa’s contribution to Women’s Basketball on a National level. At a time when almost all HS basketball girls were shooting a “set” shot, Tonkawa grad Betty Scott (Dr. Betty Edgley) was shooting a jump shot. Scott’s prowess on the Basketball Court landed her a scholarship at Wayland Baptist from 1959-1963. While at Wayland she was the National Free Throw Champion as a Freshman, and involved in one of the longest winning streaks in Women’s Basketball leading to the induction of her and her teammates into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame.Scott Captained the US women’s team in the Pan American games bringing back the Gold Medal. Dr. Edgley received her Doctorate from Oklahoma State University where she also served as the Cowgirls’ first tennis coach. On a personal note my dad was fortunate to coach Scott her Senior year at THS. My two favorite memories of Dr Edgley are first when working on her Master’s degree at OU she took her little brother Pete and two of his classmates, me included, to watch the 1969 Heisman Trophy winner Steve Owens at Norman. Then in 1985 after watching OU and OSU in the “Ice Bowl” in Stillwater she was gracious enough to let us in the door even though the Sooners won to warm ourselves at her fireplace. So with all due respect and admiration Dr Edgley, thanks for the memories and Boomer! Just kidding Betty!Part two in a series running through Homecoming week.
