If you look at the numbers, one would wonder how the Bucs lost this one.
More first downs.
More offensive plays.
More time of possession.
More yards rushing.
More yards passing.
More total offense..
Then there’s the two glaring numbers, that is....turnovers and the final score.
Three interceptions and two fumbles lost resulted in a 14-30 advantage to Morrison Thursday night.
The turnovers were just too much for the Bucs to overcome.
The Wildcats, who took over sole possession of third in the district standings, parlayed two fumbles and two interceptions in the first half into a 22-0 lead at intermission.
The Bucs closed the gap, but it was too little, too late.
Tonkawa’s first break came when Morrison muffed a punt snap and Peyton Day was there to give the ball back to the Bucs at Morrison’s 32.
Tonkawa used a 14 yard run by Tristan Burdick and a 13 yard run by Peyton Day for a first and goal at the wildcat five.
Four downs later, the Bucs were stopped just outside the goal-line.
On first down, Peyton day rushed the backfield, swiped the ball out of the Morrison quarterback’s hands and Joby Jauregui was there to cover and score the first touchdown for Tonkawa. Peyton Day ran the conversion and suddenly, the Bucs were back in it, trailing 8-22 with four minutes left in the third.
Unfortunately, Morrison went 45 yards in six plays after a 15 yard penalty on the Buc sideline gave the Wildcats the ball on the Tonkawa side of the field.
The touchdown by Trevor Hughes with 1:19 left in the third quarter and the subsequent Hughes PAT run gave Morrison a 30-8 lead.
The never-say-die Bucs used Peyton Day’s 23 yard kickoff return to spark a 67 yards march in 11 plays. The touchdown came on a fourth down pass from Burdick to senior tight end Cody Morgan from three yards out with 8:30 left in the final period. The PAT run failed.
Unfortunately, that would be the end of the scoring.
After that, both teams traded punts and interceptions to run out the clock.
Jake Randall intercepted late in the game but that opportunity was lost when a fumble resulted in the inability to get a first down.
The Wildcats took over and ran out the clock.
Noah Campbell led the defense with eight tackles. Peyton day and Parker Miller each had
7.
Jauregui, Campbell, Peyton Day and Kai Day were all in on tackles behind the line of scrimmage.
Morrison improves to 5-2 overall and ...
