For six seniors, donning Buc football orange and black is over.
But we believe they had fun even in a 14-47 loss to Hominy last
Friday night.
Tonkawa ends the season 5-5 for the year and misses the playoffs for the first time in five years.
But don’t feel sorry for seniors Parker Miller, Peyton Day, Austin Sharp, Joby Jauregui, Cody Morgan and Mason Byrum.
They’ve had an amazing four year high school career.
After two straight 7-4 campaigns in Class 2A, they posted an historic 14-1 season last year in their first Class A appearance in a decade and won the state championship -- Tonkawa’s seventh.
Many of those seniors had some big plays Friday night in their final game as a Buccaneer footballer.
-- Parker Miller intercepted and lateralled to sophomore Jake
Randall (he had an interception, too) at the Buc one yard line to stop a Hominy scoring drive. At the time, the Bucs trailed 14-33 and Hominy had a first and five at the Buc 26. Randall returned that lateral 29 yards to the 30.
-- On the final PAT kick of the night by Hominy, seniors Cody
Morgan and Peyton Day blocked it.
Miller’s interception and lateral to Randall was like passing a baton to a talented sophomore class the next two seasons. Buc football is alive and well thanks to these seniors and with an unbeaten eighth grade class joining a very talented sophomore and junior class next year, who knows!
After Hominy jumped out to a 14-0 lead, the Bucs closed the gap 6-14 with a 30 yard touchdown run by Kai Day. The score came on the eighth play of a 64 yard drive including a 19 yard run by senior brother Peyton day.
Hominy, however, would score three straight times with the help of an interception and a fumble recovery.
Down 6-33, Tonkawa would score one more time. Peyton Day scored on a 10 yard run at the 5:45 mark of the third quarter. Tristan Burdick ran the two point conversion to narrow the lead 14-33. The 54 yard drive took seven plays and included a 14 yard run by Burdick and two eight yard runs by Kai Day.
Sophomore Kai Day led runners with 124 yards on 22 carries.
That’s when excitement returned to the Buc sideline. Junior Clay Massey onside kicked and Kai Day was there to cover.
Unable to pick up a first down Brendan Ochoa punted 39 yards and Kai Day was there to force ...
