STILLWATER, Okla. — Nothing went right for Oklahoma State against West Virginia on Saturday, Oct. 5, 2024.Oklahoma State (3-3, 0-3) mustered up only 227 total yards on offense, while giving up 558 yards on defense as the Mountaineers took the 38-14 victory over the Cowboys at Boone Pickens Stadium in Stillwater.“I told the team, ‘We got so far behind early in the game offensively, it set us back,’” Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy said. “Defensively, we couldn’t get off the field. Third downs, they were 9 of 15. That’s way too much.”While it’s been offense that’s struggled in recent weeks, the defense was a problem Saturday as well.West Virginia (3-2, 2-0) had 389 rushing yards, including Mountaineers’ running back Jahiem White collecting 158 rushing yards and a touchdown in the contest.“We’ve got to do a better job of fitting the run,” Gundy said. “We didn’t tackle well in this game at all.”The Cowboys offensive woes continued Saturday, especially in the running game. OSU had only 36 rushing yards, with Ollie Gordon II having the longest run at 14 yards.“I thought we got pushed around inside,” Gundy said. The passing game saw some life later in the contest, but it struggled as well for most of the game.Alan Bowman went 10 for 19 with 119 yards and one touchdown, but he had two interceptions in the contest as well.Garret Rangel came in late in the third quarter, and he went 4 for 5 with 75 yards and one touchdown against the Mountaineers.“I thought he played pretty good,” Gundy said on Rangel.Gundy said they will evaluate the tape, and see where they are at quarterback heading into the bye week.Offensive lineman Preston Wilson said he is confident in Bowman and his ability to overcome this tough stretch of games.“He’s a fighter, and he’s a competitor,” Wilson said. “He’s been through a lot already, so I’m sure the stuff we say to him; he already knows.”Now six games into the season, Gundy mentioned that the Cowboys have to stay the course with what they’re trying to do on offense.“You’re not going to wholesale change in the middle of the season,” Gundy said. “You can make small changes, but you’ve got to get better at what you’re doing.”West Virginia got up 10-0 at the end of the first quarter after a Michael Hayes II 39-yard field goal and a 10-yard touchdown pass from Nicco Marchiol. After ...
