ARKANSAS CITY, Kansas --The Northern Oklahoma College Mavericks dropped two games to
Cowley College Wednesday night in Arkansas City, Kansas.
The Maverick men lost to 16th ranked Cowley 3-1 while the Maverick women lost to Cowley
5-1.
Both NOC teams are 0-2 on the season.
Cowley 3, Mavs 1
Cowley College scored two late goals to break open a 1-1 tie and beat NOC 3-1.
The Tigers are ranked 18th in the NJCAA.
After Cowley took a 1-0 lead, the Mavs tied the game midway in the second half as Alex Ellis scored off a goal kick by Kareem Williams. Cowley then answered with two goals in a two minute span to pull away 3-1 in the final 10 minutes.
“First off, I want to congratulate Cowley on a hard fought win,” said head coach Michael Duroy.
They (Cowley) have a very good team. They are certainly one of the top teams in the country and they deserved to win tonight.”
“I will say that our guys executed our game plan really well, and played extremely hard for all ninety minutes,” he added. “I was very proud of their effort and organization. They did a great job of limiting Cowley’s possession to the midfield for the most part.”
Despite the loss, Duroy is seeing improvement.
“We are learning and growing from every game,” he said. “Tonight we played so well, but the second goal deflated us. We dropped our heads and lost concentration for a few minutes and they were able to get the third goal to put the game out of reach. We all need to be able to put adversity behind us and continue to focus on the game, including myself. I did a poor job after the goal of refocusing the guys. I do feel like we are moving in the right direction. We are improving.”
Cowley 5, Lady Mavs 1
The Lady Mavs fell to Cowley 5-1 Wednesday night.
NOC trailed 4-0 before Maddie Cochran scored her second goal of the season cutting the lead to
4-1. Cowley then added a late goal to win 5-1.
The Mavericks started off quickly but gave up an own goal off a Cowley corner kick. Ten minutes later Cowley scored a second with a nice finish from their center forward.
Cowley scored two early goals in the second half, then Cochran gave NOC a goal with a great free kick that sailed over their goalkeeper. Cowley then completed the game with a converted penalty kick.
