That pretty well sums up how Tonkawa beat Newkirk 49-14 Thursday night in the latest edition of Kay County Bedlam.
Senior tailback Tristan Burdick ran for 231 yards on just 15 carries and scored four touchdowns, one from 70 yards away.
Junior Jake Randall caught the lone touchdown pass (32 yards) of the evening from freshman quarterback Ryan Morgan on fourth down with a brilliant pass and catch. Randall also intercepted three Tiger passes, setting up one touchdown and running back another 86 yards for, yes, you guessed it, a touchdown.
And to cap it all off as the third quarter drew to a close, junior Jake Morgan blocked a Newkirk punt at their own 20, picked it up and ran it 11 yards for the final touchdown of the evening.
Placekicker Carson Robinson was perfect on all seven conversion kicks.
That put the Bucs up 49-0.
The Tigers would score two late touchdowns.
Junior Linebacker Noah Campbell helped lead a stellar defensive showing by the Bucs with 12 tackles. Jake Morgan had 10 and Clay Massey 9.
Defenders held Newkirk to a net 100 yards rushing and 60 yards passing. And half of that came in the final quarter against Tonkawa’s second unit.
Burdick’s first TD run of the night came late in the first quarter. It was set up on a pass from Morgan to Jaidyn Guzman fir 23 yards.
Randall’s runback of the interception early in the game broke the back of the Tigers. They had covered a Tonkawa fumble and driven all the way to the Tonkawa 10 yard line. With first and ten at the 10, Clay Massey dropped their QB for a five yard loss. Then Carson Robinson, Noah Campbell and Guzman dropped their tailback for another yard loss. On third down from the 16, a pass fell incomplete. Then Randall performed his heroic interception, running it back all the way from the 14.
Burdick followed that up with a 70 yard run and the Bucs were up 28-0 at halftime.
On the first possesssion of the third quarter, the Bucs left little doubt to the outcome with a 64 yard march in 9 plays. In the drive, Morgan and Burdick had runs of 14 and 13 yards respectively and Morgan hit Guzman for a 13 yard aerial.
