Burdick ran for touchdowns of
55, 63 and 11 yards while rushing for 301 yards to lead the
Tonkawa Bucs to a 42-30 District A-5 win over Woodland Friday night.
Burdick also passed for another touchdown, five yards to Parker Miller.
The Bucs amassed over 500 yards rushing for the night.
Running Back Peyton Day rushed for 127 yards and scored touchdowns from 31 and 18 yards.
The Bucs never trailed in the game, but it got close at times.
Tonkawa jumped out to a 12-0 lead, but a kickoff return let the Cougars get close enough to score with four seconds left in the first half.
There were three touchdowns scored in the final 24 seconds of the first half. Burdick’s pass to Miller came with just 24 seconds left.
Woodland returned the ensuing kickoff 43 yards and two plays later scored, adding a two point conversion that narrowed the gap 8-12.
The Bucs got the ball back at their own 37 with two seconds left.
That’s how the half ended, right?
Nope!
Burdick worked his magic, threading his way through defenders as time ran out for a 63 yard TD run. Then he ran the two point conversion to give the Bucs a 20-8 halftime advantage.
Tonkawa upped its lead to 34-8 on an 11 yard TD run by Burdick and a 31 yard scoring gallop by senior Day. Day’s TD came on a one play drive set up by sophomore brother’s Kai fumble recovery. Kai day had six tackles, but five of them were behind the line of scrimmage. He pillaged the Cougar backfield the entire evening. Kai’s fumble recovery had come at the Cougar 21, but a holding penalty had moved Tonkawa back to the 31.
The sophomore running back rushed for 73 yards.
Relaxing a bit, the Buc defense allowed Woodland to go 62 yards in 10 plays and it narrowed the gap 14-34.
Woodland used a unique onside kick to get another offensive possession and scored on first down from 49 yards away on a quarterback keeper.
Suddenly, the Bucs were only up 12 -- 22-34.
Fool me once, but not twice.
This time the onside kick was dead at the Woodland 47, short of the ten yards needed. Tonkawa only used five plays with senior Day scoring from 18 yards out and also added the two point conversion. With 4:01 left in the game, the Bucs had their 20-point advantage once again, 42-22.
