kicks off at 7 p.m.
Tonkawa’s defending 2018 Class A state champions will take the field for the first time in 2019 this Friday at Buc Stadium.
Kick off is at 7 p.m. vs. Blackwell here.
Head Coach Mike Kirtley likes to say at the start of every football season, “Last year is history. This year’s a mystery.” Tonkawa’s numbers continue to increase with the addition of senior Dylan Hamilton (6-3, 155) at wide receiver/defensive back.
Billed as the Chikaskia River Showdown, the Blackwell-Tonkawa rivalry was renewed in 2014 after a 30-year plus absence.
Since then, the Bucs have reeled off five straight wins -- 8-6, 26-12, 35-22, 61-34 and 23-17 last year.
The longtime rivalry ended in 1981 after two straight wins by Tonkawa, 28-0 and 6-0.
“The Maroons have a lot of really good skill people back” from last year’s 2-8 ball club.
Head Coach Rick Lang believes this could be a breakthrough season for the Maroons.
They have six starters back on offense, including quarterback Mikey Riley (6-1, 195). Others include Kendall Burtner (6-2, 220) at slot receiver, Tanner Botts (6-0, 170) Brett Lenon (6-2, 190), Trevor Goodenough (6-0, 180), Riley Fleshman (6-4, 235).
Defensively, there’ll be Christian Mora (5-11, 190), Matthew davis (6-4, 220), Worthy Shepherd, (6-2, 190), Alex Norton (6-0, 255).
