Tonkawa takes its 1-0 record and 46-31 win over Newkirk and hits the road the next two weeks.First up is Perry this Friday, Sept. 8. Then the Bucs go to Blackwell the following Friday, Sept. 15, before returning home and opening District A-5 league play. The Maroons are 1-1. Perry opened with a win over Mannford 25-0, but got beat last week by Luther, 6-38.“They run multiple exotic formations offensively,” Buc Head Coach Mike Kirtley said. The Maroons run a spread offense and a four front defensively.Kirtley ImpressedOn the Newkirk win, Kirtley said he was “very impressed with Ryan Morgan. He showed the most exceptional leadership I’ve seen in a long time by fighting through a really bad ankle. It was just out of the ordinary,” he said and “sets a really good example for our younger players.”A ‘Crazy’ GameKirtley called the Newkirk game a “crazy” game. “I guess luck follows speed and the bounces went our way,” Kirtley said. The head coach predicted Newkirk “is going to fire some shots in 2A this year again.”Kirtley said Lucas and Peyten Keith’s “play on both sides of the ball was huge.” He said he was happy with Kale Dice and his play calling. “Of course, you’re always happy with a win.“We were fortunate to win and exposed ourselves to lots of things we need to get better at,” Kirtley continued, “I was really happy with our young guys -- Loudyn Alexander, Barrick Wano and Matthew Gottman. We feel like we have some depth.”
