It’s Kay County Bedlam week. And what better way to kick off the 2020 football season than to match up Tonkawa vs. Newkirk in the first ball game of the year in the county.
The Bucs go to Newkirk Thursday, Sept. 3 with kick off at 7 p.m.
A year ago, Tonkawa beat the Tigers 41-0.
But the Tigers have a new coach and a fresh outlook on the season.
And the Bucs are really green with the loss of starters Kai Day, Nathan Anderson and Luke Shepherd.
So lots of young players will be seeing action for Tonkawa for the first time.
“Newkirk’s just pretty good,” Buc Head Coach Mike Kirtley said this week while preparing for the season opener.
He said the Tigers will probably be in a spread offense with lots of option and a 4-3 defense.
They’ll be led by first year head coach Eddy Scott. Newkirk finished 2-8 a year ago and is back in Class 2A and is picked to finish behind Chisholm, Luther, Perry, OCS Blackwell, Alva and Hennessey in 2A-1.
The Bucs will be in District A-3 this year with Cashion, Oklahoma Bible, Crescent, Watonga, Hinton and Oklahoma Christian Academy.
In the Pigskin Preview, the Bucs are picked to finish second. However, in the Daily Oklahoman Coaches’ poll, Tonkawa is picked fifth behind Cashion, Crescent, OBA and Watonga.
