After missing last week’s game vs. Morrison due to COVID-19, Tonkawa will open its District A-3 play this Saturday at 7 p.m. at Crescent.
Note the change from Friday to Saturday!
Head Coach Mike Kirtley said the game was moved to Saturday in order to give the six players that were quarantined time to get back in shape and acclamated to the offense and defense. The Morrison game will not be re-scheduled, Kirtley said.
The Morrison game will not be re-scheduled, Kirtley said.
None of the six players (five of them two-way starters) were sick, but were in close contact with a classmate that tested positive, therefore got quarantined for two weeks. All students in classrooms are required to wear masks.
They all return to class Thursday, Oct. 1.
“Even with the six gone, we’ve had good practices the past two weeks,” Kirtley said.
Crescent brings in a 4-0 record this Saturday night. They’ve beaten Hennessey 13-7, North Rock 41-0, Apache 20-18 and OBA 27-20.
The Tigers have one district game under their belt as with the OBA win.
“Crescent is big and fast,” Kirtley said. “And they run multiple offenses and defenses.”
This will be Tonkawa’s first game of the season vs. a Class A team. They opened the season vs. three straight Class 2A ballclubs (Newkirk, winning 49-14; Perry, losing 39-26; and Blackwell, winning 15-14).
Crescent has one state championship -- 1990.
The Buc-Tigers series hasn’t been active since the 2000-01 seasons. The Bucs beat them 48-8 in 2000, 35-0 in 2001.
Before that it was 1993 when the two teams met up with the Bucs winning 19-6.
