Tonkawa lost its first game of the season 6-22 to a run-oriented Pawnee team Friday night.
The Bucs went 80 yards in
15 plays early in the fourth quarter scoring on a 15 yard
Tristan Burdick run. It was the second 15 yard run for Burdick in the drive. He also had passes to Parker Miller for 17 and 20 yards.
But it was too little too late.
The dye had been cast.
The Bucs were already down 22-0 at that time and there were just a little over eight minutes remaining in the game.
The loss drops the Bucs to 4-1 on the season and 1-1 in District A-5 with ninth ranked Pawhuska coming to tenth ranked Tonkawa this Friday night.
Pawnee, now ranked seventh statewide, is unbeaten at 4-0 and 2-0 in league play.
The Black Bears took charge of this game early, going 94 yards in 18 plays to claim an 8-0 lead early in the second quarter. Pawnee then added another 74 yard march in 11 plays to claim a 16-0 halftime advantage over the Bucs.
Tonkawa had its chances.
Late in the first half, Tonkawa moved the ball from its own 36 to just outside the Pawnee 20 only for time to run out. In that drive, Burdick had runs of 15 and 11 yards and passes to Peyton Day for 21 yards.
In the opening drive of the second half, Tonkawa moved from its own 38 to the Black Bear 23, turning the ball over on downs. Burdick had a 19 yard run in the drive and passes to Miller for 23 yards.
Pawnee’s final TD came on a 46 yard pass play late in the third quarter, the eighth play of another 73 yard effort.
Following Tonkawa’s score in the fourth quarter, Pawnee took over on its own 26 and 13 plays later made it all the way to the Buc 11 before time ran out.
The Black Bears go to Woodland this Friday night. All of Pawnee scoring came from junior quarterback Blake Skidgel and junior running back Trevor Mitchell.
Burdick finished the evening with 110 yards rushing on 21 carries. He was 4-9 passing for 81 yards.
Parker Miller led the defensive charge with 25 tackles. Peyton day had 15, Noah Campbell 14, Kai Day 12 and Burdick 10.
Miller also had a fumble recovery, caused by Jake Randall.
Kai Day, Peyton day, Joby Jauregui and Noah Campbell were in on tackles behind the line of scrimmage.
