Don’t put much credence into Watonga’s 0-4 record.
The Eagles are next up for the 2020 Tonkawa Buc footballers.
Kick off is at 7 p.m. Friday at Watonga. It is Homecoming for the Eagles.
“They’re really athletic and really fast,” Head Coach Mike Kirtley said this week. “That’s the best word I can use to describe them.”
Offensively they run a power pistol and a spread; defensively, a “40.”
The Eagles are one of the few teams that still run a version of the wishbone offense.
Joe Jackson, who rushed for 987 yards and 12 toucchdowns as a sophomore moved from halfback to quarterback.
Senior Joe Rinehart, who rushed for 450 yards last year, offers a contrasting running style to Jackson at the other halfback spot. Cale Lorenz, 185 pound junior, is back at tight end. Kerby Easter, a 240-pound senior, tackle, heads the offensive line. The other tackle is Kyle Brown, also 240 pounds.
The eagles have been in the playoffs four of the past five years under fourth year head coach zac Maynard. They were 6-5 a year ago.
Losses came to Rush Springs 18-45; Minco 20-27; Cashion 12-54 and OBA 7-34. All but OBA and Rush Springs are in the top ten statewide in Class A.
Kirtley said he thought the Bucs “played hard” last week at Crescent. “We only got in one full practice because of the kids who had been quarantined, but we had really good practices all week. All our kids stepped up and worked hard. I was proud of that.”
