Sometimes it’s hard to find anything good in a 42-0 loss.
But there were some in Tonkawa’s loss to top-ranked Cashion Saturday afternoon at Edmond Santa Fe.
Consider these:
- - The Bucs were obviously able to move the ball, considering they held the ball almost a minute longer than the Wildcats.
- - Tristan Burdick rushed for over 100 yards for the eighth straight week, garnering 116 yards in 27 carries.
- - In five punts, kicker Brendan Ochoa kept Cashion at bay and gave the Buc defense a chance to hold. He average 49 yards per kick, including long ones of 62 and 60 yards.
- Tonkawa was moving the ball after falling behind 14-0 when the Bucs fumbled at the 23. The loose ball was picked up at the 16 and returned all the way to the Wildcat 41.
- - Disaster for Tonkawa was avoided just 30 seconds before halftime when Cashion intercepted the Bucs a second time. A 12 yard pass completion and a 15 yard penalty on top of it set the Wildcats up with a first down at the Buc 17. As the Cashion runner ran into the endzone, he fumbled the ball away and Fireshaker Davis was there to cover it for a touchback. There were only eight seconds left.
- - Even after a fumble and interception dug the Bucs into a 28-0 halftime hole, Tonkawa came out swinging in the second half. The first ray of hope came when Burdick intercepted at the Buc 48 and ran it back 37 yards to the Cashion 15. With a first and goal at the four, three running plays for minus yardage and an incomplete pass turned the ball back over to the wildcats who went 90 yards in 7 plays.
Cashion ran the final 7:13 off the clock in the final period to preserve the win.
Noah Campbell led the Buc defense with 11 tackles. Clay Massey had 10.
Tackles behind the line of scrimmage were made by Jake Morgan, Campbell, Ochoa and Burdick.
