The Fruits boys -- David and Brett -- may have provided fireworks at the beginning of the game last Friday night, but the Bucs provided it in the fourth quarter.
Tonkawa scored two touchdowns in the final six minutes of the ballgame Friday night for a comefrom-behind 28-23 nail-biting victory over Dibble.
It sets up a third round date with long-time playoff rival Thomas there at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 27.
The Bucs jumped out to a 14-0 lead early in the first half, but then saw it all disappear in the second and third quarters.
Tonkawa would not score again while the Demons scored 23 unanswered points to take a 23-14 lead with 7 minutes left in the ball game.
After the ensuing kickoff midway of the fourth quarter, Tonkawa used some trickery with wide receiver Nathan Anderson (who had missed the last two ballgames while under COVID quarantine) passing to wide receiver Jake Randall for 26 yards to get the 62-yard, six play scoring drive under way. Tristan Burdick had runs of 15 and 11 yards and scored from three yards out with 5:54 left in the game. On the two point conversion, Burdick passed to Noah Campbell. All of the sudden it was 22-23.
Dibble returned the kickoff to its own 32. On first down, Brendan Ochoa got a five yard sack, then Miccael Brown and Anderson got a stop. On third down, Anderson caught the receiver for a two yard pass loss, forcing a punt.
By then, only three minutes were left in the game.
After losing two yards on a run and two straight incomplete passes, on fourth and 12 from their own 31, quarterback Morgan hit Randall for a 14 yard pass, good for a first down at the 45.
On the next play, Morgan hit Burdick wide left and the senior tailback did the rest racing down the far sideline for a 55 yard touchdown with 1:52 left in the game to put the Bucs back up 28-23. The PAT pass failed.
The ensuing kickoff went out of bounds, giving Dibble the ball back at their own 42. On fourth and two from midfield, Campbell, while tackling the runner, forced the ball out and Jake Randall was there to recover with 55 seconds left.
A 19 yard gain on a bootleg by Ryan Morgan sealed the win over the Demons and allowed the Bucs to run out the clock from the Dibble 39.
