Tonkawa eighth graders had to hold on in overtime to turn back Newkirk 22-14 Monday night in the season opener for both teams.
The sixth and seventh graders lost the opening game 0-18.
Both teams will go to Perry next Monday, Sept. 16, with action getting under way at 5 p.m.
Ryan Morgan got the Bucs on the board first with a seven yard TD run. Peyton Keith ran for the two point conversion to put the Bucs up 8.
Morgan then hit Landon Beliel for a 50 yard TD pass to go up 14-0 at halftime.
Turnovers plagued the Bucs in the second half and that’s what let the Tigers tie up the game.
The final play of regulation saw a halfback pass from Keith to Morgan cover 39 yards all the way to the one yard line, but time ran out and to overtime the game went.
Morgan ran for seven yards for a touchdown in the first overtime and then ran for the conversion as well to put the Bucs up 22-14. On second down, Landon Riley intercepted Newkirk’s pass, ending the game.
Morgan covered a fumble and Sam Anderson intercepted a pass during the game as well.
