Tonkawa’s Buc footballers begin their quest for an eighth gold ball this Friday when they host Mounds.Kick off is at 7 p.m. Admission will be $10 unless one uses the OSSAA ticket process explained on page 8 of today’s issue. There is no double elimination in football playoffs. You lose and go home, ending the current season.Mounds comes to Tonkawa no stranger to the Bucs. They were in the league with Tonkawa back in the 1994, 1995, 1996 and 1997 seasons, losing all four years to Tonkawa in league play.“They play a different brand of football,” Head Coach Mike Kirtley said Sunday while watching game film.“They have a really good quarterback,” he said. Offensively, the Golden Eagles will run the spread, “with several guys who play well in space.”Defensively, Mounds will be in a 4-3 and “they put lots of pressure on the line of scrimmage,” Kirtley continued. He issued the following warning: “Whoever wins Friday night will have a tough row in upcoming playoff matchups.” If Tonkawa wins, they go to unbeaten Colcord, then they would host unbeaten Ringling in the third round if the Bucs continue to be victorious.Kirtley praised the team for their 20-8 win over Woodland. “They’re still playing good and not making too many mistakes. We expected there would be some boo-boos Friday night, but that was expected with the weather conditions. We made some adjustments at halftime and it paid off big in the third quarter.”
