David Hernandez
2019 Qualifier for THS All-Star Showcase
David Hernandez has qualified for the THS Danny Blubaugh
Memorial All-Star Showcase as a 2018 Oklahoma Coaches Association (OCA) All-Stater in Cross-Country.
David is the fifth THS athlete to qualify for the THS All-Star
Showcase in Cross-Country. He joins Chandler Tarrant-THS 2013
(All-State 2011 & 2012), Omega Reese-THS 2014 (All-State C-C
2013), Manny Reyes and Brandon Hurst-THS 2014 (All-State
2013) as qualifiers for the All-Star Showcase in cross-country.
David’s family include his mother, Enriqueta Mercado, his father Jesus Hernandez, and a brother Christian Hernandez.
David participated in Cross-Country for 4 years, basketball for 4 years, and track for 2 years while at THS.
David told this writer he followed his brother, Christian Hernandez, and Cousin Manny Reyes to run in Cross-Country. Manny
Reyes, along with teammates Brandon Hurst-THS 2014 (All-State
2013) and Anthony Jauregui-THS 2014, attended Northwestern
Oklahoma State University in Alva and helped improve their cross-country program to a new level.
David was mentored by his brother, Christian, and Manny
Reyes. David said he would sometimes consult with Manny by telephone.
In track David ran the 1600M and 3200M runs and was on the
3200M (4 X 800) relay team. David, along with 11 others, qualified for the 2019 State track meet. David qualified by winning the
1600M and 3200M runs at the regional meet in Cherokee and the
4 X 800 relay team placed fourth. David had hoped he could place high enough to medal at the State meet, especially in either the
1600m or 3200m runs. Although David improved his season’s best times by about 10 seconds in the 1600M run and 25 seconds in the
3200M run at the State meet, his highest finish was seventh in the
1600M run (one place from a medal). However, the competition at the 2019 Class 2A State meet was especially difficult because the
State records in both the 1600 and 3200M runs were broken.
David said his Mother has taught him to work hard and helped motivate him in sports. He feels participating in sports has helped him learn to cope with challenges in life and to become “tougher minded”.
David mentioned three of his teachers at THS that have had positive influences on him; Angela Reyes, Mrs. Shoffnner, and
Heather Schreen. He also felt his coaches had not only helped him become a better athlete, but also to grow to become a better person with stronger morels.
