East Rutherford, N.J. — The Buffalo Bills defense did the unthinkable at the end of the second quarter against the New York Jets on Monday Night Football. The Bills let Rodgers, one of the greatest Hail Mary throwers in NFL history, heave up a desperation moonball to the end zone as time expired in the first half. And somehow – some way – Jets receiver Allan Lazard came down with it for a touchdown. What should have been a 10-point halftime lead shrunk to three points. The Bills defense had to respond – and that’s precisely what it did.“One thing about us is we line up and play the next play,” Bills safety Damar Hamlin said after the game. “If something bad happens, we treat it like a fluke. The ball was in his hands when Hamlin made contact and wrapped his arms around Wilson. Then safety Taylor Rapp came flying in with a huge hit to dislodge the ball. The pass breakup forced the Jets into a field goal try, and veteran Greg Zuerlein missed. Rapp also saved a touchdown on the drive when Jets running back Breece Hall got free down the left sideline and broke off a 42-yard run. Rapp was the last line of defense, and he was able to tackle Hall to the ground. The Bills scored their only points of the second half on a 22-yard field goal from Tyler Bass. Buffalo’s offense ran out of steam in the second half, punting on two of their final four drives after touchdowns on three of their first five drives in the ...
