Chaplain Al Slusser of Arizona was in Tonkawa this week. Ironman Grandpa at age 80, as he was affectionately called, walks 8 to 10 miles a day. The Coast 2 Coast walk is dedicated to senior citizens and Americans with disabilities as well as U.S. troops and veterans. He tries to encourage everyone to try to “fulfill your dream.” He said, “I heard horrorstories about people walking alone and camping as I did. Anything can happen on mountain trails, busy highways and deserted roads. walking with wild animals around, dangerous traffic conditions, people with malicious intentions, plus threatening weather of all kinds without a major injury, accident or incident was a miracle in itself. I wanted to test the strength of my faith in the Biblical promises in this challenging way.” He calls America’s greatest heroes as the Armed Forces, emergency medical, emergency services, fire protection and law enforcement personnel (which includes 911 operators, ambulance and helicopter crews, clergy, crisis intervention, hotshot crews, search and rescue and many others). “These heroes are always ready to rescue or assist others during local and national emergencies,” he said, “I believe every American owes them a great debt of gratitude.”
