The final day of Tonkawa Public School will be May 15, it was decided at Monday night’s meeting of the Board of Education.
Present by tele-conference were Cara Beth Johnson, Jerry Hook, Nancy Appleman and Casey McAninch. Mary Allan was absent.
Superintendent Lori Simpson said High School Principal Kyle Simpson was holding out for a traditional graduation. “But it may have to be later than the last day of school,” she said.
“It may have to be June or July,” Kyle Simpson said. “We have air conditioning in the event center. We need to give the kids something to look forward to,” he said.
The school is continuing its feeding program on Mondays and Wednesdays from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Five meals are given in sacks for each student ages 0-18. Last week, the school fed 238 on Wednesday and another 200 on Monday this week.
In other action, the school board:
-- Approved a resolution to change the 2019-20 school calendar making the last day of school May 15. It also ensured employee pay for the remainder of the year.
-- Approved personnel to serve on the Professional Development Committee as follows: Chair Stacy Jacques; and members Kelly Martin, Kyle Simpson, Kelly Klufa, Chris Jernigan, ShaClair Garcia, Francis Wecker and Kelsey Smith.
-- Were informed by Superintendent Simpson the district would receive about $130,000 through the Cares Act recently enacted by the U.S. Congress. She also announced school storm shelters would be open during stormy weather.
