Tonkawa city councilmen have voted to ask for an “RFP” (Request for Proposal) to build a new pool at Blinn Park.
The vote was 4-1 with Mayor Ken Smith, Vice Mayor Glenn Cope, Councilmen Scott Klufa and Stacy Burns in favor and Councilman Jack Evans against.
The new pool will be built in the vicinity of the tennis courts next to the splash pad.
It will be paid from proceeds from a capital improvements sales tax approved by voters earlier this year.
The city’s present pool was built in 1936 and closed in August of 2016.

About 50 people were in attendance.
No one spoke against the pool, other than Evans who said the city just “couldn’t afford it.”
Here is what is planned:
The City Council and many Tonkawa Citizens have been working on plans for a replacement for the City’s Municipal Pool for many months. The Council has decided to present a proposal to the Citizens of Tonkawa that is very similar to municipal pools recently constructed in Hennessey, OK, and Belleville, KS.
The Pool: The pool shall be approximately 5,400 square feet in water surface area and have a water volume of not less than 180,000 gallons and shall include a zero entry area, a play area and a four (4) lane lap area 75 feet in length that includes a diving well and two (2) diving boards (1m and 3m).
Bathhouse: The bathhouse is to be split-faced masonry block totaling approximately 1,660 square feet. There shall be hot water to the showers, lavatories and the concession area. It will contain an admissions office, a concession stand, as well as restrooms, showers and changing areas.
Pool Equipment Area: A screened area of approximately 750 square feet adjacent to the chemical room side of the bathhouse is to be provided. This area is to contain the surge tank, pump vault, filter and backwash tanks, flooded suction pumps, valves and miscellaneous equipment.
Pool Deck and Grounds: The pool deck surrounding the perimeter of the pool and the bathhouse apron at the zero depth entry side is to be approximately 5,100 square feet. A six foot chain link fence is to enclose the perimeter of the pool side grounds and is to include one (1) each six (6) ...
