Think It’s Hot, Tenderfoot?
Ask Natives About Last Year
So you think it’s hot, eh tenderfoot? Why it’s cool, downright cool, George. You should’ve been here a year ago.
You thought when the thermometer read 102 Wednesday that just because it was the hottest day yet in 1954 you had reason to gripe. You should’ve been here last year. It’s cool, I tell you.
You want it in black and white? Okay, here goes. It was 102
Wednesday, Consolidated Gas company’s weather gauge shows it.
That followed days when the mercury read something like this: 98 on Tuesday, 98 Monday, 96 Sunday, 96 Saturday, 98 Friday, 99
Thursday and 92 Wednesday.
Well, Okay. So you mopped your brow a little bit. Guess you had a reason, since the temperature has averaged 84 (by taking the high and low mark each day and dividing by two) for the past 12 days in Tonkawa. But do you know what the natives were doing in
June, 1953? Take a look.
On 11 of 12 consective days from June 10 to June 21 the mercury passed the 100 mark and on June 15, 1953, the all-time high reading on record, 112.5 was made here. The average temperature for the same period a year ago was 91, seven degrees higher than this year.
And you think it’s hot. Why, it’s downright cool, George, downright cool.
