50 years ago, November 21, 1974Pam Burns Is Named Tonkawa’s Junior MissMiss Pam Burns, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Don Burns, 507 North 7th was crowned Tonkawa’s 1974 Junior Miss Saturday night at Wilkin Auditorium.Miss Burns, a green eyed blonde was over six other contestants, all high school seniors, and will represent Tonkawa at the Oklahoma Junior Miss Pageant at Miami January 3-5.Miss Burns, who is a member of the Mixed Chorus, Girls Glee Club, National Honor Society, Football Queen, Treasurer of FHA and Cheerleader, plans to enter a business profession when she graduates from college.Named as first runner-up was Judy Hullet.Other contestants were Mary Coyle, Ann Fitzgerald, Melani Lauer, Marta Moorman and Sharon Oxford.The judges named as individual competition winners: Melani Lauer in the Youth Fitness division; Pam Burns in the Poise and Appearance division; Ann Fitzgerald in Personal Interview; Judy Hullet in the Creative and Performing Arts presentation.Miss Hullet had presented a version of John Denver’s “Thank God I’m a Country Boy.”Emphasis in judging is placed on character, personality, intelligence, community service, achievement and personal ambition.Miss Burns had performed a routine to “Honeybun” from the musical “South Pacific.”Kent McAninch Wins Award In National ContestKent McAninch, RFD 1, Tonkawa, agronomy senior at Oklahoma State University, was awarded fifth place and $60 in the national essay contest which is sponsored by the American Society of Agronomy.Contest awards were presented Thursday evening during the society’s 1974 annual meeting held in Chicago. Bernard Rempel, RFD 4, Enid, received the second place silver medal and $90. He also is an agronomy senior at OSU.Kent’s prizewinning essay was titled “Putting a Charge in Your Spray.” Ken’s parents are Mr. and Mrs. J. W. McAninch. He attended Northern Oklahoma College at Tonkawa during 1970-73, and transferred to OSU in early 1973. While farming, and commuting to his college classes, he has accomplished a C-plus academic average to date.Three Persons File For School Board Position Three candidates filed for school board position number two last week with the Kay County Election Board of Newkirk and will run for the post at a special election on Tuesday, Dec. 3.Those filing were: John Kreger, 304 South Second; Gladys Charlene Morrill, 315 N. Main and J. C. Fath, Rt. 1, Box 118, Blackwell.Voters will name a member to the Tonkawa board of education to fill the position vacated by Ruel Case when he resigned from the board last summer.Four ...
