50 years ago, August 8, 1974 Tuition Financial Aid Program Is EstablishedRecent action by the Oklahoma Regents for Higher Education has established a new financial program to help pay tuition fees of college undergraduates.According to Clane Kirtley, financial aids officer at Northern Oklahoma college, the program called the State Student Incentive Program, acts as a tuition subsidy.Funds under the program are derived from an authorization of the Oklahoma legislature and matched by grants from the federal Congress.A student who qualities can receive as much as 50 percent of tuition at the college he attends, but Kirtley added “This amount may not exceed $500 in any one academic year.”Eligibility is determined through financial need as well as moral character and citizenship. This applicant must also have a full-time undergraduate status.Kirtley indicated that the actual amount of the tuition subsidy received is determined on basis of a family’s effective income and number of dependents in each family.Tonkawa Women Named To National ProgramMrs. Jack Cales, Mrs. Curtis Jackson and Mrs. John Main have been selected as Outstanding Young Women of America for 1974, according to Paul Reeder, director for this national awards program.They are now being considered for further state and national awards. This fall, fifty-one of the young women nominated for the Outstanding Young Women of America program – one from each state and the District of Columbia – will be named as their state’s Outstanding Young Woman of the Year. From the fifty-one state winners, the national Ten Outstanding Young Women of America for 1974 will be selected. These national winners will be presented at a special awards ceremony to be held this fall in Washington, D.C.The purpose of the Outstanding Young Women of America program is to recognize young women between the ages of 21 and 35 for their exceptional contributions to their professions, community and their country.
