Approval Given For Downtown BeautificationApproval of plans was given Thursday night at a meeting of the civic improvement committee with merchants to begin a downtown improvement project which will include construction of specially designed planters and planter-bench combinations for the three blocks of Grand in downtown Tonkawa.The meeting was attended by 15 persons. Overall plans, drawn up by Gene Dougherty, NOC art instructor, were okayed by the group. Cost of the project has been estimated at $3.10 per front foot of each business in the three block area.Plans call for planters on each of the four corners at Grand and Main and Seventh and Grand. In addition brick planter boxes, connected with benches will be constructed on the sidewalk in the middle of three blocks of Grand, on both sides of the street. Some type of foliage will be planted in the planter boxes.Replacement of sidewalks in the three block area is also being pushed by the committee with cost of this work borne by the individual merchants. Plans for the beautification have been in the planning stages and under consideration for about two years.Perry Invades Maverick Field For Friday GameCoach Jim Minor predicted a good tough ballgame Friday night as the Perry Maroons invade Maverick Field to meet the Tonkawa High school Buccaneers in the season-opener football game.Perry will bring a team that consists of eight offensive starters and three defensive starters back from the team that tied the Bucs 20-20 at Perry a year ago. The Bucs will have three offensive starters, fullback John Buffalow, end Mike Morgan and center Lee Conaghan and two defensive starters, tackle Chuck Storm, and Marvin Klufa, a line backer who started against the Moroons.Perry will probably start an offensive unit that averages 165 pounds in the backfield and 175 in the line.
