50 years ago, August 31, 1972National Honor Is Received By Tonkawa TeacherMrs. Curtis Jackson (Nancy) has been selected as an Outstanding Elementary Teacher of America of 1972 according to Mrs. Beverlye Brining, Prin., Union 61 School.Nominated earlier this year, Mrs. Jackson was selected for this national honor on the basis of her professional and civic achievements.Outstanding Elementary Teachers of America is an annual program honoring the men and women who have distinguished themselves by their service and leadership in the field of elementary education. Each year, the biographies of those honored are featured in the awards volume, Outstanding Elementary Teachers of America.In announcing the award winner to the school principal, Dr. V. Gilbert Beers said, “have explored new paths, developed new insights, and effectively communicated their knowledge to their students and colleagues. They are the exceptional teachers.”Guidelines for selection include a teacher’s talents in the classroom, civic service and professional recognition.Dr. Beers, in addition to directing the national education awards program, is a noted teacher, writer and editor of educational publications.Class Officers Are Elected At Tonkawa Hi SchoolElections for class officers were held Wednesday, Aug. 23, Tonkawa high school.Those elected were: Seventh grade: Laura Howeth, president; Eric Williamson, vicepresident; Stewart Terbush, secretary; and Lisa Brown, treasurer.Eighth grade: Suzanne Steichen, president; Mark Detten, vicepresident; Karen Nesbit, secretary; and Janet Langdon, treasurer.Freshman class: Kay Beth Detten, president; Larry Case, vicepresident; Dana Lyall, secretary-treasurer. Sophomores: Emmet Colelman, president; Jim Rogers, vicepresident; Dona Andrews, secretary-treasurer.Juniors: Gary Walcher, president; Sherry Jeffries, vice president; Kim Nichols, secretary-treasurer.Seniors: Doug Sloan, president; Paula Humphries, vice-president; Lisa Canaday, secretary; and Reta Martin, treasurer.Enrolllment At Northern Reaches 1210Enrollment at Northern Oklahoma college was reported at 1210 this morning. Rex E. Herren, NOC registrar, indicated that enrollment this time a year ago was 1205. The 1210 figure is a preliminary count as regular enrollment will continue until Sept. 12.Herren noted, however, the methods of computing enrollment statistics have changed. Reports of previous years included all who had enrolled without deducting withdrawals prior to the start of the term. This caused an inflation of some 50 students over the number actually present.College officials generally feel that this change in computing is desirable in that it provides a more realistic count of those actually in classes.Herren said fall enrollment this year at Northern will not be complete until later in the semester when certain evening classes will be starting.
