50 years ago, March 30, 1972Tonkawa Students Win District Poster ContestFive Tonkawa grade school children have been named North Central district winners in the Poster Contest sponsored by the Oklahoma Garden Club Inc. They are Justin Ballard, Eddie Burns, Julie Coulter, Melanie Hawkins and Brad Allen Purdy. Three of those, Justin, Julie, and Melanie, were first place winners, and their posters have been sent to the state contest for judging. Brad was a second place winner, and Eddie third.All had been prize winners in the local contest sponsored by the Tonkawa Garden Clubs, and their posters sent to Enid for district judging. Entrants in the contest could choose one of two poster themes, “Save our Trees,” (conservation) or Keep the Scene Clean,” (litterbug.) Division for entries were Division I (grades 1-3); Division II (Grades 4-6); Junior Division (Junior High). There were 37 posters entered in the local contest, 23 in Division I, 13 in Division II, and one in the Junior Division.The complete list of local winners was: Division I, Washington School, Justin Ballard, 1st; Eddie Burns, 2nd; Dora Green, 3rd, Lincoln school, David Fruits, 1st; Brad Purdy, 2nd; and Mike Vines, 3rd. Division II: Mark Caughlin and Duane Ailey.Junior Division: Sandra Simmons. Mrs. Louis Vines and Mrs. Denzil Kight were chairmen of the local contest.Grand Champion Steer Shown By Gary WalkerTonkawa took an active part in the building and supporting of area FFA and 4-H boys and girls Friday night at the blue ribbon sale of animals at the Kay County Junior Livestock Show at Newkirk. For the second year in a row, a Tonkawa firm purchased the grand champion steer. Gary Walker, Tonkawa FFA had the top steer in the show and it was purchased by Farmers Real Estate and Auction Company for $1.55 a pound for the 970 pound animal.
