50 years ago, March 23, 1972Travis Garten Named Alternate North All-StateTravis Garten, Tonkawa High school senior guard and leading scorer on the Buccaneer basketball team was named an All-State alternate on the North team Sunday by the Daily Oklahoman. Garten, 6-0, was the eleventh leading scorer among all boys in the state for the season.He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Garten, 101 South Fourth. Last year Garten was named All-State in track and given a trophy as the leading high school pole-vaulter in Oklahoma.Ted Sipe Hired As Principal Of Kansas SchoolTed Sipe, former Tonkawan, has been hired as principal of Lincoln Elementary School in Chanute, Kan., for the fall semester, 1972. Sipe has been in Chanute for the past two years, teaching science and coaching basketball and football at Royster Junior High. Previous to that, he taught for six years in Wilson Elementary School in Wichita, Kan.He will receive his Master’s Degree from Kansas State College at Emporia in August.Ted is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Dean Sipe, Liberal, Kan., former Tonkawans. He is married to former Marilyn Heady and they have two daughters, Kim and Kris. They were week-end guests at Marilyn’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Eber Heady, southwest of Tonkawa.NOC Girls Win 4th at National BB TournamentThe Northern Oklahoma college girls basketball team, with one loss and two wins finished fourth in the Girls National Junior College Tournament Saturday night at Lindsay when they posted a 54-43 win over Vincennes, Ind.In first round action the girls lost to Ranger, Tex., the defending national champion on Thursday night. Then on Friday night they came back and won over Weatherford, Tex.
