The past few weeks we have been think a lot about the resurrection. I can only imagine all the feelings that were going through the minds of the women as they went to the tomb that Sunday morning. Just three days earlier they had watch their good friend die on a cross. Now there are walking in the dark (John 20:1) before the sun rose on their way to finish the preparations of Jesus’ body for burial.I often wonder why they were going so early. They couldn’t do that on Saturday as “work” was prohibited. But then they could have gone after sundown on Saturday evening as the Sabbath observance would be over. Maybe there was fear of being detected by the Jewish leaders. I’m not sure why they chose this time. Maybe it was God’s will as the stone was already rolled away and Jesus was risen! (Matt. 28:2).But these women did not know that because as the group was walking toward the tomb, they began to discuss that they didn’t know how they were going to move the stone away from the tomb’s entrance (Matt. 28:3).When they arrived they saw the stone rolled away. They must have wondered how this could be. Had someone else come to prepare Jesus’ body for burial? Had the authorities moved the body? As they looked into the tomb they didn’t know what to expect, but they were expecting to see Jesus’ body.Instead they see a “young man,” which we know was an angel. The angel tells them that he knows they are looking for Jesus, but they are looking in the wrong place because He is risen (Matt. 28:5-6). Now they are told to go tell the disciples this amazing news. But they still don’t seem to understand. Mary Magdalene runs and tells Peter and John that the tomb is empty (John 20:2). These two disciples run to the tomb and also find the empty tomb. John tells us that they still did not understand what was happening (John 20:9). So Mary comes back to the tomb not understanding. This time she sees two angles who said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” Her answer is that somebody has removed the body and she want to know where they have taken the body.Mary, in her grief with eyes clouded with tears, sees someone who asks her again, “Why are you crying?” Mary ...
