God’s promises are designed to give us hope. Psalm 30:5 tells us “Weeping may last through the night, but joy comes with the morning.”
We all have moments, days, and even longer periods of time when things are very hard; many things bring us to tears and heartaches. If hope were a spring shower, then it would seem that we sometimes live in the Sahara Desert! Unfortunately many seem to search for a reason to live.
We wonder if God has a promise for us. But God made this and other promises to us. Yet, even those who know the Lord don’t always cling to His promises. That word of promise I want us to look at today is Psalm 30:5. The NASV translates the verse: “Weeping may last for the night, But a shout of joy comes in the morning.”
We have all experienced the first part of the verse – Weeping may last through the night, and through the next night, and the night after that…
That is not news to any of us. But we need to focus on the second part of the verse: “Joy comes with the morning.” It is telling us that when we know God, we know that sorrow will not last forever. It may look bleak now, but God has this promise.
Just as in the musical “Annie,” she sings “The sun will come out tomorrow.” There is hope and longing for something better – tomorrow. This is a great hope when we find ourselves in a dark place.
I think this is how May Magdalene may have felt after the death of Jesus. Luke 8:2, tells us that Jesus had cast out seven demons from her. It is hard for us to imagine the kind of darkness she felt before Jesus came into her life. The number seven is sometimes used in the Bible to describe completeness, so she was probably completely consumed with troubles. Now we can know that after Jesus cast those demons out she could sleep through the night, enjoy her life, and smile again. Jesus restored live to her!
Mary followed Jesus. She helped take care of Jesus and the disciples needs (Luke 8:3). Without a doubt she listened to him teach and watch him perform miracles. So Mary Magdalene was at the crucifixion. She must have watched as the nails were driving into his hands; she saw the spear thrust into his side.
