The Law of Moses decreed that a High Priest preside over worship. Aaron was the first High Priest, and all members of Israel’s priesthood were required to be descended from him. But he was one of many priests who offered sacrifices of various kinds on the sacred altar. But once a year, on the Day of Atonement, only the High Priest officiated on that day and entered into the “Holy of Holies—the presence of God.
Heb. 4 tells us that Jesus is our High Priest and He is greater than Aaron! Aaron was a sinner who needed cleansing, but Jesus never sinned! Aaron offered animal sacrifices, while Jesus offered Himself as the perfect Lamb of God! Jesus offered eternal salvation for all who believe and obey Him. Jesus is the only way we have access to the mercy and grace of God…which gives us confidence in our salvation. Our faith is based on five important points.
Frist, our faith is in Jesus who entered heaven (Heb. 4:14). The High Priest in the Law of Moses could only enter the Holy of Holies annually! But our Jesus is at the right hand of the Father reigning in His Kingdom today! He is in heaven in the presence of God.
Second, our faith is in a Savior who understands our weaknesses (Heb. 4:15). This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testing we do, yet he did not sin.
Third, we have confidence in our faith because we are invited into the throne room (Heb. 4:16). So, we are invited to come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we receive God’s mercy, and find grace to help us when we need it most. The words “come boldly” has the meaning that we are free to speak—that’s part of our confidence.
Fourth, our faith is in the God who rescues us from death (Heb. 5:7). While Jesus was here on earth, he offered prayers and pleadings, God who could rescue him from death. As we see God keeping his promises to Jesus, we can trust that he keeps promises to us (1 Peter 1:3).
Fifth, faith in the God of eternal salvation is for all who obey him (Heb. 5:9b). Christ became the source of eternal salvation for all those who believe and obey him
