January is School Board Recognition Month and an opportunity for local schools and communities to honor Oklahoma’s more than 2,700 elected school board members for their dedication to children and schools.
“Providing our community’s children with a solid education is the most important investment we can make,” said Superintendent Lori Simpson. “We’re proud of our district, and School Board Recognition Month is the time to say thank you and celebrate the accomplishments of our elected board members.”
In Tonkawa, school board members must develop policies and make tough decisions on complex educational and social issues affecting the entire community. They bear responsibility for an annual budget of almost $7,000,000, 794 students, 89 employees and 7 buildings.
“School board members make critical decisions that affect Oklahoma children and oversee billions in educational expenditures,” notes Simpson. “They preserve the core of our democracy—public education.”
Tonkawa School Board members were recognized at the monthly board meeting on Monday, January 13t, 2020.The Tonkawa Mid-Hi & High School Student Council teamed up to prepare a Mexican fiesta dinner for the board. Members received a certificate of appreciation for their dedication to the school and the children of Tonkawa. In addition, students from PK through grade 12 wrote notes of appreciation, made banners, and created posters for the walls of the boardroom.
The men and women serving Tonkawa and their years of service are: President Carolyn Johnson 18 years; Vice President Casey McAninch 3 years; Clerk Nancy Appleman 12 years; Member Mary Allan 14 years. Member Jerry Hook 4 years.
