A string of burglaries into many Tonkawa residents’ vehicles occurred from the end of November and continued until December 7, 2020. Most, if not all, of the vehicle burglaries occurred on vehicles left unlocked. Thousands of dollars’ worth of property was stolen, from vehicles, by the thieves. Stolen property included: clothing, professional camera equipment, tablets, jewelry, electronics, shoes, sporting equipment, backpacks, medical equipment, school supplies, facemasks, identification documents, social security cards, driver licenses, family keepsakes, and a large sum of cash & coins. The burglaries were typically committed during the overnight hours and were no more than one or two cars per night. Recently, in early December, multiple vehicles were being burglarized at night. Tonkawa Police Officers observed a specific pattern and continued to investigate the burglary reports. Tonkawa Police canvased the burglarized areas and interviewed many neighbors who had security cameras installed. Police were able to collect a good amount of camera footage that captured the burglary suspect(s) in the areas and, in some cases, committing the acts. More Tonkawa residents came forward to report burglaries or to provide security camera footage.
After an extensive investigation, the Tonkawa Police Department narrowed probable suspects. On the afternoon of Wednesday 12/09/2020, at approximately 5:01 p.m., Police Officers of the Tonkawa Police Department, the 8th District Attorneys Office, the Kay County Sheriffs Office, and Fort Oakland Police Department executed two Search Warrants on an apartment at 401 N. 9th Street in Tonkawa, OK. During the service of the Search Warrant, four people were detained and later interviewed. While in the apartment, Police observed and recovered a large portion (nearly all) of the stolen property reported by the victims of the recent burglaries. The crime scene was processed by authorities and the property was recovered from the apartment. Three adults were arrested as a result of the investigation:
