With the ending of summer and the fall months here, seasons are opening in the hunting world. The first of those seasons being those involving migratory birds. Namely Dove season is one that is incredibly popular in the area. Beginning September 1 and ending October 31 and reopening December 1 through 29, Dove season marks the beginning of hunting season for many in Oklahoma.Unlike many other species that have hunting seasons, most dove aren’t invasive harmful species, barring some exceptions. Many hunters use Dove season to sharpen their skills, train their bird dogs, and as an experience for new hunters.“I dove hunt because I love it. It is the first chance to get out again after all summer of no hunting. Dove season kicks off all the fall seasons. It is a great group activity, the more people you have the more successful you are. It gets you amped up for October and November during Deer season. It’s the getting together and having a good time that makes me love it the most,” says Dan Emery, a lifetime hunter in Oklahoma.Overall, while Dove hunting is not a necessary season for agricultural purposes, it is a great chance for new hunters, seasoned hunters to prepare for further season, dog training, and like Dan Emery said, a great chance for friends and family to get together. There are a number of public lands for people who don’t have access to their own lands. Through the Corps of Engineers, Department of Wildlife, and more, citizens can receive maps of the public access lands that allow people to hunt on government land.
