(Published in the Tonkawa News, Tonkawa, Oklahoma, Thursday, Sept. 21, 2023)Kay County Commission Monday, Sept. 5, 2023 Newkirk, Oklahoma The Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) of Kay County, Oklahoma, met in regular session at 9:00 o’clock a.m. on Monday, September 5, 2023, the meeting was posted for public information on September 1, 2023, at 8:50 a.m. at the Commissioners Room, west entrance of the Kay County Administration Building in Newkirk, Oklahoma, and on the Kay County Website.Chairman Shane Jones called the meeting to order: Commissioners: Jason Shanks, Member, present; Jeff Kreger, Member, present. Others present were as follows: Brian Hermanson, Kay County District Attorney; Steve Kelley, Kay County Sheriff; Janell Leaming, Kay County Assessor; Brenda Medlock, Rachel Rolando, Cathy Denny and Ashley Gonzales, OSU Extension; Dan Hesson, Citizen; Everett Brazil, Ponca City News; Claude Williams, Taxpayers for Transparency; Tammy Reese, Secretary/Kay County Clerk.Chairman Shane Jones led the flag salute.Motion was made by Kreger and seconded by Shanks approving the regular meeting minutes of August 28, 2023. Motion carried: Kreger, aye; Jones, aye; Shanks, aye.Discussion with the OSU Extension office introducing new employees and reporting on events held in August: Brenda Medlock, Extension Educator FCS/4-H, CED introduced Cathy Denning who was hired through the Fatherhood Grant, and Ashley Gonzalez who is bilingual and will be able to reach more of an audience. Medlock introduced Rachel Rolando who was hired and started on August 28th as the Education Educator 4-H; Medlock said Rachel will hit the ground running as she prepares for the upcoming fair next week. Medlock said the annual Achievement Banquet was held in Newkirk; she said the Kay County 4-H Hall of Fame is awarded during this banquet. This year’s winners were Hannah Cross and Tyler Gilbert, both will get their picture displayed in the Kay County office for one year. Medlock also mentioned attending and leading a canning class. FCS Educator Medlock teamed up with FCS Educators from Logan and Noble County to hold Home Food Preservation Workshops in Kay, Noble, and Logan Counties. Medlock told Extension Educator AG/4-H Shannon Mallory was attending a Master Gardner program today. She stated Dr. Hailin Zhang who has been with Oklahoma State for 27 years will be retiring this week.Establishing a committee to organize an open house for the new buildings and remodel of the courthouse, and a 100-year celebration of the courthouse.
