Our Museum story from today comes from an old brochure entitled “Tonkawa Traffic Guide”. It looks to be approximately 100 years old.Here were all the basic rules of driving:1. All vehicles are to keep to the right2. Windshields are to be kept clean to insure no vision be obstructed3. Drivers withdrawing a motor vehicle from the curb must observe all is clear behind him and proceed the same direction he was heading.4. A person was to allowed to have his engine to backfire repeatedly carefully or willingly .5. No vehicle was to appear on the city streets at night unless equipped with dimmers.6. No vehicle was to be driven without good brakes.7. Tractors or any heavy type of machines which would damage the city streets were not to be driven on the pavement without first planking the track8. Light tractors could run on the pavement provided the lugs were first removed from the vehicles.9. Between 8 AM and 7 PM each day it was unlawful for vehicles to remain part for longer than two hours on Grand between sixth and ninth Street’s, seventh Street between Center and Tonkawa avenues and Main Street between Oklahoma and Tonkawa avenues.10. No automobile was to be driven on tonkawa streets with other than a standard horn or klaxon; bells, sirens and gongs were prohibited.11. The speed limit within the city limits was not less than 8 mph and no greater than 20 mph.
