At 6 p.m. on Friday June 14 in the Summit of Ponca City’s newly-restored City Center, the New Emergency Resource Agency
(NERA) will host Hunger Feast, a very special event celebrating its 100th anniversary of helping to Stamp Out Hunger in North
Central Oklahoma.
The Hunger Feast will feature a CanStruction Art Gallery with unique and creative sculptures sponsored by a local business, made entirely of canned goods, and built by creative artisans from local clubs and schools. Attendees will receive a special voting chip to select their favorite sculpture, which will then be re-created and displayed at the NERA office before all sculpture cans make their way into the homes of our locals in need. The Hunger Feast dinner, crafted by the talented culinary team at Pioneer Technology Center, will be served lottery-style - with each attendee not knowing what they will be served until a plate is put before them, reflective of the very real food uncertainty that NERA clients experience most every day.
Over the past 100 years, Ponca City has been blessed to have NERA right here in town. As one of only 12 official Food Resource Centers in the State of Oklahoma, NERA provides its screened and verified clients with periodic selections of free, fresh, and nutritious food presented in a friendly grocery store setting. On many Tuesdays, NERA also provides limited rent and utility assistance, and hosts official SNAP food stamp counselors from DHS in Oklahoma City. For those 60 and wiser, NERA packs and distributes special Senior Food Boxes on the second Thursday of each month.
All NERA food items are either donated from local businesses, individuals and churches, or provided by the Regional Food Bank as part of the national non-profit Feeding America - the nation’s largest domestic hunger-relief organization.
Those individuals in need and living within a service footprint from the Kansas/Oklahoma border down to Red Rock, and from Interstate I-35 over to Shidler, are generally eligible to register as a client for NERA assistance.
Tickets for the Hunger Feast are available now in NERA’s office located at 112 South 1st Street in Ponca City, Cherokee Strip Credit Union’s Prospect Ave branch, Equity Bank in Ponca City and Newkirk, or by clicking the DONATE button on NERA’s website and noting “Hunger Feast” during your purchase.
