The Letter Carriers’ Stamp Out Hunger® Food Drive is the outgrowth of the National Association of Letter Carriers’ tradition of community service, a tradition exhibited repeatedly by members of the letter carriers’ union over the years. For many years, a number of NALC’s branches (locals) had collected food for the needy as part of their community service efforts.
All food collected in Tonkawa stays in our community. Our local food pantry is run by Christian Life Church. In recent years the Tonkawa food drive has collected between 900 and 1400 pounds.
One in 7 people in the US fight hunger and for kids it’s higher, 1 in 5. The local Postmaster is challenging businesses and families alike to jump in and make a significant difference this year. Chances are we all know somebody that is and will be affected by this problem. Donations can be dropped any time this week at the local Post Office or simply left by your mailbox in a plastic sack on Saturday morning. Venture Foods and Dollar General stores in Tonkawa, have graciously agreed to leave a shopping cart out designated to the Post Office so the customer can buy some food and donate it without having to carry it home!
