Northern Oklahoma College student Ken Williams’ love for sports has paid off as the Perry sophomore has turned that love into broadcasting.
A student in NOC’s Mass Communication Program, Williams announced Maverick basketball this winter as well as Tonkawa Buccaneer football during the fall.
“It’s been a lot of fun,” Williams said during the Region 2 Basketball Tournament. “I’ve really enjoyed it. It’s different than being a fan or watching games on TV.”
Williams had never broadcasted a game until this fall and appreciated the assistance of Mass Communication instructor Dean Pearcy.
“I was really nervous at first,” he said. “But as time went on, I got more comfortable. Mr. Pearcy helped me so much, first just getting comfortable with the equipment and then helping me on the air.”
Which is easier football or basketball?
Football is so much easier because there is more time to describe what is going on,” he said. “Basketball is so much faster so it’s hard to keep up at times. You don’t have a lot of time to describe what’s going on, you do it a lot by instinct.”
Pearcy commented on Williams’ work this year for KAYE 90.7 FM.
“Ken has a passion and knowledge for sports that has served him well,” Pearcy said. “He jumped in with both feet and helped broadcast both football and basketball this year. I really appreciate all he has done.”
Despite his love for football and basketball, his real passion is Mixed Martial Arts (MMA).
“I love to watch it,” the ex-wrestler from Perry said.
Williams plans to continue studying broadcasting at a four year school.
