THS Art, Tonkawa American Legion, and the VFW will begin collecting donations this week to raise money to replace the flags used on our veteran’s graves at the Tonkawa Cemetery. The parade size flags placed each Memorial Day on Veterans graves are over twenty years old and are well worn. The majority of the flags are in need of retirement and with increased veterans graves to honor the American Legion and VFW are need of six hundred fifty to eight hundred new flags.
THS Art students will be collecting donations for the next three weeks in order to have the flags ready for this Memorial Day. Donation boxes will be placed at various businesses around town including Venture Foods, Jiffy Trip, Hammerheads, Mary’s, Simple Simons, Jims Barber Shop and Quiddy’s. Students have been busy making ceramic magnets in two styles that can be received with a donation of three dollars or more. If you wish to receive a magnet for your donation you will need to make a donation at the following participating businesses: First National Bank, Farmers Exchange Bank, Chamber of Commerce, and the Tonkawa Public Library.
Students and VFW/Legion members will be at Venture Foods the next to Saturday morning’s taking donations and the magnets will be available at those times as well. This is a student driven community project so if we have missed a business that would like to participate of if you have any questions call Dawn Huff at 580-628-2566.
