Shebester-Bechtel Well Service introduced him to the Oil & Gas industry, and he pursued a career in Oil & Gas for 44 years. He has worked in 26 foreign countries and is co-owner of 4 patents for Oil & Gas downhole drilling tools. He settled into Engineering Design when he joined a team working on the primary pump station for the Trans-Alaska Pipeline that runs from Prudhoe Bay in northern Alaska to Valdez, Alaska for further crude oil transport to the lower 48 states. In the ‘80s, Roger joined Smith Tool designing rock bits and moved into technical field engineering and technical sales. His final design team assignment led him to Russia where he worked in Siberia during the winter in -20 to -40 degree temperatures.During his career, Roger designed with a team tasked with installing an offshore production and drilling platform in the North Sea off the coast of Stavanger, Norway. Installation was in a water depth of 230 feet. He also worked in Bogota, Colombia during the height of the drug cartels. Security was extremely tight at the site: sixteen foot tall fences and guard towers surrounded each drilling location. Helicopters flew in all personnel, equipment, and drilling tools. Roads around operation yards were swept daily for mines buried at night by guerilla fighters.Additional international assignments to South-East Asia, Australia, and New Guinea followed. Johns then traveled to South America, focusing on drilling operations in Brazil, Argentina, Bolivia, and Peru, working at high altitude. While operating in the Peruvian rain forest near the Machu Picchu ruins, Johns’ team drilled an exploration well with a Helicopter Rig.In the 2000s,
