Tonkawa delegates to the 2022 Oklahoma American Legion Auxiliary Girls State are announced by Evelyn Coyle, local chairman, far left in the photo. Students are (left to right): Aniya Berry, Rylee Hampton, Rachel Means, Gracie Fiscus, Heidi Hembree, Torrie Simmons and Christony Martin. Oklahoma Girls State will be held May 29th-June 3rd, 2022, at the University of Central Oklahoma, Edmond. Oklahoma Girls State was first held in 1940 and except for two years during WWII it has been held annually. Last year in 2021, Girls State was held virtually. High School girls who have completed their junior year spend an intensive week of study and working together as self-governing citizens. They learn government by actually creating a mythical state through the election of public officials on local, county and state levels and then carry out the duties of these respective offices. They will also learn proper flag etiquette and participate in a ceremony honoring military veterans. Outstanding educators and leaders will take part in the education program of Oklahoma Girls State. These speakers help to inspire the delegates to take an active role in public service. Local community contributors (past and present) to Boys and Girls are Lonnie Bray, Joe Brining, Brining Insurance, Charles Conaghan, Davis Sanitation, First National Bank of Oklahoma, Gateway First Bank, Dean Gatz, John Lucas, Mary’s Grill, Garry O’Mealey, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Owen Auto Supply, Larry Smith, Robert Steichen, Tonkawa Lions Club, Tonkawa Masonic Lodge, Tonkawa Tribe and Venture Foods.
