Tonkawa,
For the next 3 weeks, we’ll walk through Psalm 27, a Psalm of David that guides the believer to “look upon the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living (Psalm 27:13).” So far David has shown the importance of remembering God’s works and the importance of gazing on God’s beauty. So what does this entail? How do we “gaze upon the beauty of the Lord”?
In your bible there is no notion of drifting or floating along towards beauty.
The only way you will gaze on beauty is to live intentionally. Listen to the beauty famished king:
One thing have I asked of the LORD, that will I seek after... You have said, “Seek my face.” My heart says to you, “Your face, LORD, do I seek. (v4,8)”
The Grand Canyon is beautiful, at least that’s what I’m told.
You know who gets to see it? The people who work to save the money, hop in the car and drive there. God’s beauty and our fuel to attain the resurrection, is something we seek after, not hope we drift into. So how do we seek? First, through corporate worship.
Part of God’s beauty for David was found in the house of the Lord, where the people of God went up to worship. Regularly gathering for worship with your church is absolutely vital for you to complete the race, see the land of the living.
Second, to be overwhelmed by God’s beauty, we give ourselves to God’s word.
Psalm 19:8,10-11:
The precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart...more to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and dripping the honeycomb (John Lucas said, “Amen!”) Moreover by them is your servant warned; in keeping them there is great reward.
A beauty famished heart needs a beautiful God to feast on, and God has spread wide His feast in His book.God’s word rejoices our heart and obeying it brings great reward. This is the way to gaze on beauty!
George Mueller, a missionary orphanage founder in the 1800’s wrote:
“I saw more clearly than ever, that the first great and primary business to which I ought to attend every day was, to have my soul happy in the Lord. The first thing to be concerned about was not, how much I might serve the Lord, how I might glorify the Lord; but how I might get my soul into a happy state, and ...
